What is Nutritional Therapy?

cancer care gut health holistic health nutrition Jun 13, 2024

Nutritional therapy is a science-based, holistic approach that uses food and nutrients to support the body's natural healing processes.

What we eat can really affect our health and wellbeing. Food is something we interact with every day, and these "small" habits add up significantly over time. However, knowing what is the right choice for you and your body feels more complicated than it ever has before.

How many posts did you see today telling you that X is the key to longevity? Or that eating more of X will solve all of your gut problems?

There's a lot of advice out there and it's gotten quite overwhelming. The problem is, while that recommendation might be correct for one person, it may not be for you. This is because nutrition advice must be bio-individual to be effective.

But I'm a pretty healthy person. Why do I need nutritional therapy?

I'm guessing you experience at least one negative thing each day, that is just "normal" for you.

Example: bloating after a meal or difficulty falling asleep.
Things that are "normal" that are actually signs and symptoms:

  • Indigestion of any kind
  • Afternoon energy lows
  • Headaches
  • Bloating
  • Fingernails that chip, peel, and break easily
  • Acne
  • Being a "light weight"
  • Itchy skin or dandruff
  • Cravings
  • Irritability/shakiness if meals are skipped
  • Insomnia or night owl tendencies
  • Many, many, more...

These things are all correctable through nutritional therapy, because they're pointing to dysfunction within a system. For example:

Acne: blood sugar dysregulation, liver dysfunction
Fingernails that chip, peel, and break easily: insufficient stomach acid, possible leaky gut
Cravings: imbalanced macronutrients (carbs, protein, and healthy fat)
Bloating: insufficient stomach acid, possible leaky gut and/or food allergies

We seek out the root cause and bring in nutrient dense foods, supplements, and suggest changes to lifestyle to bring about change.

But it runs in the family...

On the other end of the spectrum, there are people who tell me that they’re too far gone for nutrition to help them. That genetics are a curse, and they are destined to get x, y, z. But really, genetics and patterns can teach us how to take care of ourselves. I've often found that certain familial health problems repeat because the habits run in the family. Family culture and accepted wisdom play a key role in diet and lifestyle decisions. This is true of diseases largely accepted as genetically influenced or the result of bad luck: cancer.

When you become a new client, we examine the habits which are influencing your health.

The Process - In Depth Evaluation:

  • We'll start with a comprehensive questionnaire (NAQ) to assess your signs and symptoms.
  • You'll track your food intake for a short period.
  • I'll analyze lifestyle factors like cookware, water quality, and potential toxic exposures.
  • If helpful, we'll look at your lab tests and genetic information to create a nutrition plan that's just right for your body.

Nutritional Assessment Questionnaire (NAQ) Results

I really get to know you and listen to your story. Gathering all this information allows us to connect the dots. Most symptoms have a pattern, but Western Medicine isn't taking the time or asking the right questions.

What you can expect from nutritional therapy:

1. Personalized Plans: We’ll create a nutrition plan that fits you and your lifestyle. There’s no one-size-fits-all here; it’s all about what works for you.

2. Whole-Body View: Instead of just focusing on specific symptoms, we’ll look at how your diet impacts your entire body. This means understanding how different foods can affect your mood, energy, and overall health.

3. Finding the Root Causes: We’ll dig into what might be causing any health issues you’re experiencing. By addressing the root problems, we can make more effective changes.

4. Food as Medicine: We’ll explore how whole foods and some targeted supplements can give your body the nutrients it needs to thrive. Think of food as a tool for better health.

5. Lifestyle Factors: Nutrition isn’t just about what you eat. We’ll also consider how things like environmental factors (toxins, etc.), stress, sleep, and exercise play a role in your health and how to make improvements in those areas.

6. Learning Together: I’ll help you understand nutrition and guide you in making better food choices. My goal is to empower you to take control of your health, and send you on your way.

7. Preventing Future Issues: We’ll focus on keeping you healthy and preventing problems down the road, so you can enjoy life to the fullest.

Nutritional therapy can help with a range of health concerns, from digestive issues to cancer. It’s about making practical changes that support your health and help you feel your best every day.
